+1 Brake Kit for 900/9-3/9-5 Feedback needed

Since the new “norm” for our cars is in the 400whp range the stock brakes are just not enough for most driving styles.  Increasing the front capacity is the best method. My biggest gripe with the aftermarket big brake kits is wheel clearance with the fat calipers.  I have a couple big brake cars that only one set of my many wheels will fit.  Working around this we have some solutions to get more than enough braking in a reasonably priced package. I am not talking the taiwan/ china junk  Plenty of experience with that, the WP kit is in the corner of the dyno room with ~6K miles on it. Too scared of the quality to give them away.  :(  I want a top quality part that i can have 100% confidence in every time be it going to the store or running 150mph+ on the back straight into a 2nd gear corner.  Anybody interested in them  leave a note here.

Nick I would be interested. I remember you tweeting about a meeting with PFC last year.

  2. John A says:

I’m down with them if they can fit inside of a stock Viggen wheel!

    • NickT says:

That was a key requirement for the package.. Had to fit under stock wheels.

  3. Marius says:

Interesting. Will these fit in 16″ wheels?

    • NickT says:

For 16″ wheels run factory 308mm kit. Upgrade to 300mm rears after that and you should have plenty of brake with decent pads.

Im very interested in the big brake upgrade. please e-mail me a quote. also, are there replacement rotors available for these setups?

  5. Lucian says:

if you`re talking AP RACING 4pot CP5200 calipers with 330mm discs, then this it the business for the stock 17″ wheels! I have this set-up on my project car and it is the absolute sh!t ;)
    Strongly recommended!

  6. David DelTorto says:

Nick I’m interested. I’m running 18s at a very low offset. I can practically fit anything up front 4 or 6pot doesnt matter.

  7. Martin W says:

For sure, a worthwhile project. I have four sets of 17″ wheels ans tires for my Viggen and I do need good brakes underneath them. Doing many track days here in Ontario, Canada and do require some serious braking. I am on the nth set of stock Viggen rotors and various pads (most recent Hawk HPS), and Goodrich brake lines (all from Taliaferro) . Once they are done, I will be on the market for bigger brakes.

I’m an ASE certified parts specialist with over 13 years in the business. I’m a 01 Saab 93 SE owner and a general car enthusiast. I’ve been looking for bigger brake options as I mod my car past stage 1 I started with steel core brake lines to improve overall braking for the 1st stage. I’ve also made upgrades the steering and handing of the car as I look at the car as a whole and if it goes faster than it needs to stop and handle better as well.

  9. Lucian says:

for our cars, 330mm discs and 4pot front BBK are enough…more is just bling, imho
One solution is to get AP RACING CP5200 4pot calipers + new discs and fabricate the brackets & the rotor hats/bells. There is a wide variety of pads for this caliper, street&/or race/trace ;)

  10. Martin W says:

Another suggestion is to make provisions for brake cooling. Is there a way to replace the driving lights with air ducts to cool the brakes? Bigger brakes will only be effective if adequately cooled.

  11. Lucian says:

@Martin: with the 330mm CP5200 kit, on a SAAB, you are yet to over-cook the brakes. You just need a higher boiling point fluid and you`re good ;)
The 48 directional vanes in the CP3580-2898/2899 discs and the big dimensions of the CP5200 caliper concur for a lower operating temp.
True, air ducts for brakes are cool, but a little over-kill, next step would be pipping and electrical fan…or water cooled calipers, but on a SAAB? not necessary, imho

  12. Lucian says:

yet, from the picture Nick posted above, he might be considering an option to develop a BBK for SAABs together with STOPTECH/Centric.
Which, for various reasons, might be a good idea, in terms of NA support, availability, shipping costs and R&D logistics…

I’m very interested in the big brake upgrade too.
I considered european cheap 330×28 mm brake discs + Brembo calipers with adapters from Alfa Romeo (5×110; the same CB) but problem is with discs ET (height) =40. It’s ok with my BBS CK 18×8 + spacers but not with ASA 18×8,5 et35. So I am looking for p&p brake discs with bigger ET eg. ~50.
I think that price will be the key and 17″ avaiability (for winter wheels) so 1-pieces 330 mm + Brembo calipers I think is the best idea and many people will be interested in.
    Best regards from Europe.

  14. Scott Adams says:

Any chance of seeing a prototype at the owner’s convention?

  15. MartinW says:

Yes, a prototype at SOC would be nice.

  16. JohnnY says:

I’m interesting in the brake system upgrade too! Agree with Artur said. Price and fitting for 17″.

    • NickT says:

Target price is under $1k and fit under stock viggen 17s. Most other factory 17s too.

    • Artur says:

Sounds good! I can’t wait for it. Good luck with quick introduce to GS offer.

  17. IanT54 says:

Yup. Definitely interested. As long as fits under 17’s.

  18. JohnnY says:

Any update on this kit? Haven’t hear anything from GS. Cant wait to see the good stuff…

    • NickT says:

Probably not worth the time since the market doesn’t care if the parts are from China. As long as they are shiny…

    • JohnnY says:

      sadly to hear that…

  19. Lucian says:

too bad our SAAB community is relatively smaller compared to other brands…that`s why Nick and other after-market producers are not jumping to launch products…yet, as and ya shell receive ;)

    • JohnnY says:

Very true.Anyway, ppl at US is way better than us (I’m @ Canada). Canadian custom charge lots tax also have to pay more shipping as well.

  20. Lucian says:

@JohnnY: take a trip to Nick, install the upgrades on you car and go back to Canada, all smiley ;)

    • JohnnY says:

I though that b4 but just way too far..have to drive 3000+ miles. Have to work as well. So sad If they have a shop @ Vancouver everything will be easier. Right now I just do all the labor just by myself at friends car shop.

  21. Paul S says:

I am interested as well Nick.
